Hollis' Counter Intelligence
A weekly side road for the facts nobody asked for, told like they somehow belong in the paper.
This week Hollis would like the public to know that Corn Flakes did not begin as a triumph of taste. They began as part of a wellness crusade run by a doctor who believed America could be improved through restraint, blandness, and the aggressive management of appetite, which is already one of the funniest possible beginnings for a cereal aisle. His conclusion is that any breakfast invented to make people less interesting was always going to need cartoon mascots, sugar, and decades of denial to survive. He will be taking no questions except the wrong ones.
The short version is that Corn Flakes were born out of an earnest attempt to improve people through breakfast, which means American cereal has always been at least one step closer to ideology than any of us were led to believe. Hollis thinks that is hilarious, mildly sinister, and worth discussing before lunch.
